Precision agriculture used to mean walking the field and trusting your eyes. Today a single drone flight produces a colour-coded stress map of every plant in minutes. The shift is powered by three things maturing at once: better sensors, centimetre-accurate positioning, and AI that turns raw imagery into an action list.
What NDVI actually measures
NDVI (Normalised Difference Vegetation Index) compares near-infrared and red light bouncing off the canopy. Healthy, dense crops reflect a lot of near-infrared and little red; stressed, sparse or damaged crops reflect less. The index converts that contrast into a simple map: green for vigorous, red for struggling.

NDVI vs NDRE — catching stress even earlier

NDRE (Normalised Difference Red Edge) uses the narrow red-edge band to read chlorophyll deeper in dense foliage — making it far more sensitive to early-stage nitrogen deficiency. Flying both indices gives an early and a late warning system.
The hardware that makes it reliable
Industrial platforms such as the DJI Matrice 350 RTK pair multispectral sensors with an RTK module for centimetre-level positioning and hot-swappable batteries for continuous flying. Accurate positioning is what lets one week's map line up exactly with the next — so a change on the map is a change in the crop, not in the GPS.
The value is not the pretty map. It is knowing where to send a person, a nozzle or a fertiliser spreader — and where not to.
Turning maps into savings
