For years, biochar and compost have been treated as two separate soil amendments. The most recent field research turns that idea on its head: how you combine them matters more than whether you use them at all. Long-term organic trials published in 2025 report that biochar which is co-composted — added into the compost heap and matured together — consistently outperforms the same materials applied side by side.

Why compost the biochar first?
